Parody in Sports - Salary Cap.
What's everyone's thoughts on having a salary cap in baseball like they do in all the other major sports? The parody in football is unreal, but the same teams year after year after year do well and the same teams do poorly in baseball. There are the few well managed small market teams that manage to compete most years such as the Twins, A's, Marlins and maybe a couple of others, which makes for good stories. Naps is right about the Rays, they are one of the best sports stories in recent memory, but they're season probably wouldn't be so impressive if there was a salary cap. There's no doubt that ESPN would hate having a cap (they're east coast boners might become half chubs), but I'd like to know what you guys think.

no salary cap necessary.
tampa bay = 29th of 30
philly = 13th of 30
top three payrolls missed the playoffs.
mariners = $117 million payroll and 101 losses.
love or hate the yanks/sox, the baseball passion wouldn't be there if they didn't have the two highest payrolls. people hate losing to them, but they love beating them even more. a baseball salary cap would kill the game.

Yeah, I more or less agree, but it would be nice to see the Twins have a chance to sign an Alex Rodriquez, or at least hold on to a Johan Santana.
The inability to go after a 35 year old aging player (IDK how old AROD really is) is almost a blessing in disguise for a team like the Twins. You consistently unload proven players (instead of overpaying them and getting caught up in long deals) in exchange for young talent and pitchers in particular. As long as you find a good balance of signing young stars to mid-range deals (Mauer and Morneau) and getting the most out of young arms (Baker, Perkins, Blackburn, Liriano, Slowey), you can live from year to year by letting people like Torii Hunter and Johan Santana go.
the twins have that ability. Every owner can be from the steinbrenner mould, but they are too busy sipping champagne and checking attendance figures.
TheRiot, the point here is that if the twins had the same payroll as the Yankees, 290 mil a year or whatever it is, they wouldn't be a team for very long, because they would be losing money.
I was incorrect in my first statement; the Red Sox had the fourth highest payroll this season.
then what do you want your twins to do? i'm tired of the twins, A's, and all these other smaller market teams bitching about payroll. Of all the times to bring this up, you do it now...with the rays in the series. REDiculous
That's precicely why I brought it up...it got me thinking about it. I'm not saying I'm 100% in favor of it, for many of the reasons naps described, but like I said, it would be nice (if not realistic) if the small market teams had a fair shot at the top free agents.
