personally, i have no problem with it. They went a little too long on Monday, couldn't go on Tuesday, big deal. The game is still going on. Its a part of the game.
Completely agree.
I hear people whining about several issues:
1.) That Selig didn't have the power to change a 100 year-old rule and postpone rather than call a game after five innings.
2.) That Selig waited too long to call the game and that a championship shouldn't be decided in such conditions.
3.) That the game shouldn't have even been started.
4.) That it was unfair to clearly wait for the Rays to tie it up before the game was postponed.
My responses:
1.) Everyone would be going absolutely nuts right now if Selig had not changed the rule and called a deciding game in the World Series before nine innings were played. This argument is completely ridiculous.
2.) Weather is a reality that needs to be dealth with in outdoor sports. Championship caliber clubs rise above. To whine about the level of play in the game is out of line. The score was 2-2 when it was postponed. It wasn't 0-0 as a result of such ridiculous weather that no one could score. It wasn't 15-15 as a result of pitchers not being able to pitch. The fact that it was 2-2, a typical baseball score, shows that players were able to do a manageable job under the conditions and both teams had to suffer equally.
3.) Again, had he postponed the game before it even started, I know there would have been people who were outraged. Meteorologists can't even predict the weather, how can Selig be expected to do so? In the World Seires the commissioner is going to do everything he can to get the games played on schedule.
4.) Yet another ridiculous argument. Imagine what the sports media would be saying if Selig had postponed it after five innings with the Phillies in the lead. Complete mayhem would have taken over.
Let's just admit that the guy had a difficult decision and there was no way he was going to win. The actual result is not a major issue at all. The game is tied. There are four more innings to be played. The media was going to find any and every possible way to criticize him.
So, Bud, screw them all. You've done more good things for this game than bad.
What it comes down to is that the baseball season is way too long. The world series should never be decided on Halloween or in November. They need to find a way to shorten the season so the world series ends in mid-October at the latest. This way, if weather intervenes there will still be plenty of time to make up the games before the weather gets super shitty. They will probably be completing game 5 with temps in the 30's. I've played baseball when its that cold, and it sucks.
My solution, which i will take from some of the callers to the Comman Man progrum. Play double-headers on every other saturday during the regular season. This way the season will still consist of 162 games and the networks and teams will still get the revenue from 162 games. The season will end ~15 days earlier and the world series will net end in November.
In response to the issues naps brought up:
1) The only problem I have here is that is was pretty clear that the announcers were unaware of the the rule change and I wonder if the players were unaware as well. The communication of the rule change to those it affected was pretty poor.
2) Weather is part of an outdoor game...get over it.
3) They finished 6 innings...of course it should have been started
4) Who's to say the Phils wouldn't have scored again rather than the Rays tying it up?
I'm completely fine with how things ended up.
In response to making the season shorter. Get rid of divisions and the wild card. Three best records from each league go to the playoffs. Best in each gets a bye in the first round.
This would significantly cut down the time it takes to finish the playoffs and WS.
Not that I like the idea...but it is an idea. Feel free to comment.
The wildcard may be the single greatest idea of the Bud Selig era. Getting rid of it would be completely stupid
they should go back to 154 during the regular season and the only off days in the plyoffs are after the series is over. Also, all seven game series.
Squints, maybe I worded that wrong, I'm not talking about getting rid of the wild card really...rather getting rid of divisions and getting rid of the 4th team in each league getting into the playoffs. In my mind, divisions serve no purpose. Some may argue that travel distance is a reason for having them, but the way it is, there is typically a travel day in between series anyways...I don't think having a 5 hour flight rather than a 2 hour flight is such a big deal.
Some may also say that it will hurt division rivalries, but I disagree. These rivals will still play each other, but maybe not 30 times in a season.
so how exactly is this playoff going to work???
three teams from each league making the playoffs would mean #2 and #3 play the first round, the winner goes on to play #1 in the LCS and the winner of that goes on to the world series.
making a team take a week off between the end of the season and their first playoff game just wouldn't work in baseball.
naps, didn't think about that. Now that I think about though, having only three teams wouldn't shorten the playoffs anyways. But still, I don't think divisions are needed.
personally, i'd rather have a shorter regular season and a longer postseason with more teams.
i love the double header idea. still shorten the season to 154 games. that shortens the regular season by three weeks.
two divisions in each leage, east and west. top four teams from each division make the playoffs.
no breaks in the playoffs except between series.
you're doubling the amount of teams in the playoffs and still playing two weeks less total of baseball.
Double headers and 154 sounds good to me, but I think 16 playoff teams is a bit excessive, there is gonna be teams below 500 who make it in for sure. I just don't like rewarding mediocrity.
