QB Solution

So, as many Vikings are fed up with the Chili Dynasty, I got to wondering where this team is going in the next two or three years. It is obvious that this team is not a playoff contender, and if they somehow back their way into the playoffs (Playoffs!?!?!?), it is likely that they will be one and done. We still will not have an answer at the quarterback position, AP will be one year older, and the chances of this team becoming a Super Bowl force seems very unlikely with our inept coach.

I do not see how Zigi Wilf can keep Chili on after this year considering the fans' outcry for a change. If we speculate that a new coach comes to town, the Vikings will still be a QB away from being a serious contender. T-jack is not the answer, Gus is not the answer, and JDB is not the answer in the short term and will never be the answer in my opinion. No free agents QB's come to mind and it will most likely take 2 or 3 years to develop a rookie which would waste the prime of many of our players.

But wait a minute, there is a free agent out there. He led his team to a playoff victory at Lambeau Field. He is considered one of the greatest athletes to ever play the quarterback position.

Having trouble figuring it out?? The Vikings answer to the QB question is simple. MIKE VICK. Call me crazy, but to me, he is the best chance that this team has to win a Super Bowl in the next two or three years. I think he is going to come out of prison with something to prove. You cannot defend him for dogfighting, but the penalty was harsh and he did not deserve 2 years in jail. The public usually forgives a guy who admits his mistakes, and Vick has already admitted he was wrong, and he has more than paid for his crime. Give him a chance. The Vikings don't have anything to lose. They will be able to sign him for cheap, and if he doesn't return at the same skill level, they can easily cut him.

With so many good players on this Vikings roster, in the prime of their careers, the window for this team to win a Super Bowl is closing as we speek. If you guys can see a better solution, please post your arguments.

You make some good points, SerialKillah.

While I have never felt that Mike Vick is the kind of NFL quarterback to be great, the Vikings don't need great. They need competent.

Based on every aspect of this situation, I think it would be a good idea to go after him. He is certainly a step up from anything the Vikes have had in a few years. He's going to be cheap and he's going to have a chip on his shoulder. Like you said, in a worst case scenario, he gets cut.

It all depends on who else goes after him and how much they are willing to pay. Let's hope that no one wants him and he'll play for cheap...and let's hope that he comes out of the slammer ready to roll.

Is he still owned by the falcons or will he be a free agent when he gets out?

I'm not sure Vick is the answer either...even in his pime, he was never really a guy who could stretch the field with his arm. Not a very accurate passer. And while I agree, that he is a step up from T-jack or Gus or JDB, there might be better options out there. (although I can't think of any off the top of my head) Aaron rodgers is done after this season...lets go after another Green Bay QB. haha

As much as I love to hear opinion from Killah, I disagree. The Vikings have come a long way in regards to discipline -- on and off the field.
The Vikes need character guys and I don't care if Vick just had some dogs fight because you know that's not the only screwed up shit the guy was into.
Vick can go to the Cowboys or the Raiders. I would like to see the Vikings go after a guy like Donovan McNabb if he goes on the market.
I do agree, though, that the Vikes have a good number of people who are in their prime. Pat Williams, Antoine Winfield, Matt Birk, Steve Hutchinson...those guys need to win now. And with Peterson, look at Ladanian Tomlinson and Larry Johnson, backs don't last long in this league. You need to ride em when they're young.
So let's get an adequate quarterback, patch some O-Line problems and bring back Tice!!!!! Super Bowl homeboy!!!!!!!!!

Donovan is always whining about his race, not to mention that he's always injured and starting to get old. I'd rather see them go after someone young who can stick around for a while and actually play the best football of their career.

Rodgers sounds nice, but after the Pack's decision to dump Favre for him, I'd think they plan on keeping him around for a while.

There's one major problem...

Top 2009 Unrestricted Free Agent Quarterbacks:
-Jeff Garcia
-Rex Grossman
-Kyle Boller
-Charlie Batch
-Matt Cassel
-JP Losman
-Kyle Orton
-Kurt Warner
-Patrick Ramsey

I was doing some research, and Vick could be released in November for completing some programs to decrease his sentence. Otherwise, March would be the earliest he can be released which would give him more than enough time to get comfortable with the offense. I believe the Falcons still own his rights, so a trade would have to be worked out, but I can't imagine it would take much to work out a deal. It is obvious the Falcons would not keep him because of the position Vick put that team in and the way Matt Ryan has performed.

I just think that after spending 2 years in jail Vick would be on the right path. It would cause some fans to question the decision, no doubt, but if he performs the fans will embrace him. I just don't see an answer for the Vikes. None of those QB's listed as FA's are a solution. Could you imagine the havoc Vick and AP would wreak on opposing defenses?? The vikes would rush for 400 yards a game. I just see this as the best solution for this team to win now.

AD will be a year older, 24.
Sex-Boat = No Vick.
Not sure if he'll become available, but of the list provided by naps, i'll take Warner on a two year deal. They have Leinart who has to play at some point. Of the rest, I'll take Rex.

Check out my Herald blog. I took Learing's point of view just for fun. I wanna see if anyone freaks out about it. Feel free to comment on it there. As long as you keep it clean.
