Twins...DEAD!!
After suffering another superbly frustrating defeat, the Twins find themselves 2.5 games back of the ChiSox with 11 games to go. Really tough one to swallow, but even if the Twins found a way to make the playoffs, they wouldn't have been a factor anyway. So, I propose to you guys, what off season moves should the Twins make to be better next year?? Does Punto stay or go? What to do with Cuddyer?? Which scrub veterans are we going to bring in for "leadership"?? Do we need another quality arm?? Are we ever going to find a power hitting 3rd basemen?? Have at it...

Please get us a right handed power bat to protect Morneau and break up the 3 lefties in a row (Mauer, Morneau, Kubel). A third baseman would be great, but I'd take an outfielder and maybe have Gomez start the season at Rochester or on the bench. I'd like another consistent reliever, but maybe Neshek will come back as good as he was in 06-07. I think Punto goes. Too many strikeouts for a guy with zero power and he's not as steady as everyone thinks defensively. Casilla and Harris will do nicely up the middle.
But if we only make one move, I hope to god it is a right handed power bat!!!
1.) The Twins need a REAL #1 starter. They have scored a ton of runs this year, what they need is a veteran #1 to lead the staff numbers wise and experience wise.
2.) Bullpen help. It is no secret why they keep blowing leads. They need an upgrade at the setup position and another middle reliever wouldn't kill them either. I think Neshek could be the solution there.
3.) A right handed bat. Third base would be ideal.
4.) Trade Cuddyer, he isn't what he used to be and there are teams dumb and desperate enough to bite.
5.) Gomez will come around. Give him another year with consistent at-bats and I think you'll be pretty happy. Remember how Torii was in his younger years...
Veteran #1's are pretty hard to come by unless your the Yanks or Saaawx. I'm not worried about the rotation. Liriano is gonna continue to get better (forget last night) as will the rest of the young guys. I do agree that we get rig of Cuddyer and I am willing to let Gomez have another shot at starting next year unless we pick up an outfielder with power from the right side. Then we sit him on the bench or send him to Rochester.
I agree that we need to shop cuddyer and see what we can get for him. I just don't think the front office will do so. He is just too much of a "Twins guy" and i think Gardy absolutely loves him. We would need to get some pretty good talent in return for me to be happy.
It would be nice to get another bullpen arm. Neshek will help, but who knows if he will ever be as good again. Believe it or not, but I think BOOF may end up being a pretty darn good reliever. A spring training of working on velocity and a nasty slider may make him a good 7th inning guy. Most of our pens problems have come from over work, i think, but to be a contender you need a rock solid bullpen.
I think Punto is gone. Tolbert will end up being Nick Punto, so I think we should take that discount.
Then there is Gomez. He has been playing a lot better as of late. He has 31 SBs even though he went through a huge drought in the middle of the season. His defense is only going to get better, and along with Span, they cover so much ground and take away many doubles. I don't know what they will do with him, but the situation gets a lot easier if we deal Cuddyer.
My pick for scrub veteran signing is Richie Sexson.
I think the most interesting thing to see this offseason is what the Twins will do with Cuddyer. I would love it if they platooned him at DH with Kubel. Cuddy can also play 1B and RF, which is a valuable thing. I'm just not sure you pay someone that much money for a role like that. I think Young, Gomez and Span have that OF locked for years.
I think the rotation is just fine. That's one extremely young rotation that has gotten tired late in the year because they aren't used to so many innings. In turn, it's killed the bullpen, which was already depleted without Neshek.
I agree with Boof being a good reliever.
I hope the Twins don't do a whole lot in the offseason because signing veterans is not the way to go for this team.
If anything, I'd like to see the Twins get a real infielder. Harris, Punto, Tolbert, Casilla, Buscher. They're all the same in my opinion. I want a guy who can hit 20 bombs and bring in 85-90 runs.
Squints, Harris is close to the type of player you are talking about. I don't know about the 20 bombs, but he's got around 30 doubles and I think if he played every day in the 6 spot he'd have a chance to drive in 80-90 runs. Harris actually has some pop, not the same type of player as the other guys you listed.
let's be honest, talking about what the twins are gonna do in the offseason sucks because they're not gonna DO anything.
why would you want ritchie sexson??? if you're gonna get a scrub veteran, at least get one who somehow got lucky and was on a championship team. sexson doesn't know how to play well or win games.
let's talk about what the angels are gonna do this offseason. now that would be interesting!
first of all, the twins aren't dead. They finish with three against the white sox and royals at home.
as for the off-season, the twins aren't spenders. the rotation will be the same. spending money on the bullpen is too much of a gamble. punto is gone. cuddyer has no trade value right now. he can be the DH and bat fifth. Gomez has earned a spot next year, as have Span and to an extent Delmon.
Here are a couple of realistic twins signings this off season: Morgan Ensberg, Mark Ellis, Darin Erstad
I'm not saying i would like Richie Sexson, just a guy that the front office would try to sell as a good off season aquisition. I also like the others listed by theriot as options, but also would not like to see any of them in a twins uniform.
moreno has already said the angels will have the same or a smaller payroll in 2009.
i know...
but what is their plan to achieve that goal?
vlad and ga have club options.
teixeira is a free agent.
frankie is a free agent.
garland is a free agent.
i think lackey has an option.
and c.c. is on the radar.
figgins is a free agent.
rivera is a free agent.
oliver is a free agent.
if i were the angels GM (lucky for them I'm not), pick-up the options on Lackey and Vlad. Buyout GA. Let Figgins walk along with Rivera and K-Rod and Garland and Oliver. Put that money towards Texeira and CC. They have enough pieces to win the division again, plus there will be a lot ofpitching available.
agreed for the most part, except i'd keep rivera. they can buy low because he hasn't played everyday in two years, but he is gonna be solid next year.
i also think we need to find a way to get gmj to wave his no-trade clause. he's horrible but still wants to play everyday. hopefully some team is dumb enough to let him do that.
