Alright, I said I'd do it...

So put together your ideal 25 man roster. Any major league player in history is eligible. We'll go AL rules, so you get a DH. Starters, closers, bench players, the whole bit. Have at it. This might take me a week, so don't hurry.

Sweet, I'll have to put some thought into this. One question, is this a team that we would put together for one season, or for several? i.e. do we want players that were great for only a short time, or are we looking for longevity? I would pick very different players depending.

NapsTheMasher said...

What you would think is the greatest team ever assembled. Meaning: longevity should be a factor. I would consider a player he was consistently great better than a player who was great for one season.

Ok, but that's not really what I meant. I was kinda talking about a guy like Sandy Koufax, who was dominating for 5 or 6 seasons. If I'm going to try to win one game, I want Koufax in his prime as my starting pitcher. I think it has to be one way or the other. Are we trying to put a team together for one year, one game, whatever...or are we putting a team together to try to win for 10 years?

A-Rod supposed to be at short...my bad.

RedDog20/20 said...

Naps, I really don't like your starting rotation...you don't have any of the generally considered top five pitchers of all time. I don't think Ivan Rodriguez is a good pick, and although George Brett was a great player, I think there are better choices at third. How is Honus Wagner not on this team? He is almost unanimously considered by sports writers and historians to be the best shortstop of all time (even when A-Rod is included).

Willie Mays - R - OF
Roberto Clemente - R - OF

Naps, no backup 2B?

NapsTheMasher said...

honus wagner's career ops+ is only two points higher than a-rods's, which is rising by the day. he'll finish his career the best player in baseball. i can't penalize him just because his career isn't over. i don't need a back up 2nd baseman because i already have two other middle infielders. between rogers hornsby, cal ripken jr., and a-rod i think i can keep 2B and SS on lockdown at all times. just like a-rod moved to 3rd when he joined the yankees, who already had a SS, someone might have to make an adjustment on this team because of its depth. my bench is based more on late game situational hitting, base running, and defense.

RedDog20/20 said...

Cool, but how can you justify Honus Wagner not even being on your team? Would be a much better choice than Ripken Jr. You can't look at OPS because during that era, nobody hit homeruns...if you adjust his numbers to reflect his era (ballparks, balls, league averages...etc) his OPS ranks up there with Ruth, Williams and Bonds...A-Rod is not even close. Besides, Wagner is consided the best defensive shortstop of his day. Oh yeah, and Ted Williams needs to be in the starting lineup...he's areguably the games greatest all-time hitter.

NapsTheMasher said...

also, pudge has as many gold gloves as cochrane has major league seasons.

i like schmidt, but my love for george brett was too powerful.

nolan ryan will be on every "all time great" starting rotation i put together. greg maddux won't be on any.

NapsTheMasher said...

ops+ not ops. it is adjusted for the park and the league the player plays in. an ops+ of 100 is considered to be league average.

are you getting anything done at work today, by the way?

RedDog20/20 said...

As far as Nolan Ryan goes, maybe you will have him on the all-time list, but you are one of the very few...And Cochrane may not have played for 20 seasons, but for the 14 that he did play, he was the best ever. Pudge isn't even on the top 5 list.

RedDog20/20 said...

A-Rod will not finish his career the best player in baseball history. Babe Ruth has that by miles. Nobody has dominated the game before or since like Ruth, not even close. A-Rod might end up being better than Bonds, although I doubt it, but not Ruth, not a chance.

RedDog20/20 said...

Honus Wagner's adjusted career numbers:

.324/.394/.595

This from the widely considered top 3 defensive shortstops of all time.

A-Rod:

.306/.389/.578

Who's better? you decide.

Starting Rotation:

1. Walter Johnson RHP
2. Sandy Koufax LHP
3. Bob Gibson RHP
4. Nolan Ryan RHP
5. Steve Carlton LHP

Bullpen:
Closer - Mariano Rivera RHP
Set Up - Dennis Eckersly RHP
MR - Satchel Paige (is that cheating)
MR - John Franco LHP
Long Reliver - Rollie Fingers RHP

Starting Lineup:

1. Ty Cobb CF
2. Lou Gehrig 1B
3. Alex Rodriguez SS
4. Babe Ruth RF
5. Mike Schmidt 3B
6. Barry Bonds LF
7. Joe Morgan 2B
8. Mickey Mantle DH
9. Johnny Bench C

Bench:

Stan Musial OF
Jimmie Foxx 1B
Honus Wagner SS
Rogers Hornsby IF

The only problem I foresee is my leadoff hitter and my cleanup hitter hate each other. Ty called Ruth "nigger lips". In fact, Ty might not get along with Barry then either.

NapsTheMasher said...

or joe, for that matter. a-rod is latino, so he's probably on cobb's black list (no pun intended) as well.

p.s. dan, how is your stat boner treating you? have you gotten off yet or are you suffering from a bad case of blue balls?

RedDog20/20 said...

Squints, you only have 23 players on your roster...I assume you want a backup catcher and maybe a left side infielder?? I like the Jimmie Fox pick...I wanted him on my team, but just couldn't find the room, maybe coulda taken off Willie Mays I guess. Overall, I'd say your slightly behind my team, but much better than Naps.

P.S. Naps, no I only got a little bit of a chub. And you know for damn well there was a pun intended. haha.

CHIPPER! LET'S GO!

MichaelPaladoris said...

I just realized my list didn't include who I think is the best player of all time. Insert Willie Mays in there somewhere.

NapsTheMasher said...

since i'm short one, throw honus wagner on my bench as an infield reserve. i'll probably do some platooning on this team. in fact, while i'm at it, i'll name gene mauch my team manager.
